An unexpected side effect of the trade war and broader US policy uncertainty has been a shift away from the US exceptionalism theme that dominated markets for the better part of the last decade. One of the biggest casualties has been the US dollar, as its fall has bucked its role as a traditional safe haven. We discuss how investors should think about the USD from here, and whether de-dollarization is truly realistic, or if the USD will retain its position as the world’s premier reserve currency.
